Richard Anthony Marks Develops Art Potential

The relationship between music and the elements of visual art interests Richard Anthony Marks, 28-year old artist. He listens to music (he likes the beat of some rock music) as he paints, and he has begun working on a series which involves the use of motors, lights, sound and color. He also in engaged in a a series of studies which involves motors that give movement to his paintings.
High notes come out in blues and violets, low notes in orange and reds.
The exploratory work is done during his leisure time. But one wonders how he can have much leisure time, with all his other activities. He does easel paintings which are accepted by strict juries in competitive professional art exhibitions; collages, graphics, constructions, three-dimensional clay sculptures, jewelry design, and he teaches adult education art classes for the San Diego City School System and the Sweetwater Union High School District. He also is an active member of the San Diego Art Guild; a curator, assistant secretary and board member of the San Diego Art Institute, and he studies guitar, drums, voice and piano.
Is he scattering his creative talent? On the contrary, I believe he is widening his art potentials. Talking with him, one gains the impression that he has self-discipline and persistence as well as youthful zest for exploring art in its various phases. I have followed his paintings in local art exhibitions for the last few years. They show control, unity and simplicity of de-sign. There are rest stops for the eye in the uncluttered white areas. Rest stops are as important in paintings as in music, he comments. I agree.
